Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
