• Become Versed in Craps – Pointers and Strategies: The Background of Craps

Be clever, play cunning, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
