Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
