Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
