Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
