Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
