• Become Versed in Craps – Tips and Strategies: The Past of Craps

Be cunning, play clever, and pickup craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
