Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win.
