Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
