Be smart, play brilliant, and learn how to play craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
