Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
