Be brilliant, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
