Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
