• Pickup Craps – Tricks and Plans: The History of Craps

    [ English ]

Be clever, play clever, and master craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
