    [ English ]

Be smart, play clever, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
