• Become Versed in Craps – Tricks and Schemes: The Past of Craps

Be smart, play clever, and master craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
