• Be a Master of Craps – Hints and Strategies: The Past of Craps

Be brilliant, play cunning, and pickup craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
