• Be a Master of Craps – Tricks and Techniques: The Past of Craps

    [ English ]

Be brilliant, play brilliant, and pickup craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
