• Master Craps – Tricks and Plans: The Past of Craps

Be cunning, play brilliant, and master craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
