Be cunning, play smart, and become versed in craps the right way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
