• Pickup Craps – Pointers and Tactics: The History of Craps

Be clever, play clever, and master craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
